§ 6:509. Labeling.

  • (a)

    The shipping container and immediate container of all meat and poultry being sold or offered for sale shall be labeled to show the following information:

    (1)

    Name of product; in the case of poultry, the words "eviscerated" or "ready-to-cook" shall be included within the name of the product;

    (2)

    Name and address of the packer or distributor and when the name of the distributor is shown, it shall be qualified by such term as "packed for," "distributed by" or "distributors;"

    (3)

    Identifying plant number as issued by the official government agency;

    (4)

    A statement of ingredients if fabricated from two (2) or more ingredients including a declaration as to artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, if any;

    (5)

    The net weight or other appropriate measure of content.

    (b)

    All meat and meat products or poultry and poultry products in package form being sold or offered for sale shall conform to the labeling requirements of the Louisiana Food, Drugs and Cosmetic Act, in addition, thereto, all poultry, meaning each individual whole bird, shall bear the inspection legend of the plant where slaughtered. No person shall affix an inspection legend or tag to any poultry which has not been inspected and approved in accordance with the provisions of this chapter. No person shall remove, replace, mutilate or otherwise tamper with the inspection identification. The operation of cutting up poultry shall be permitted provided that the source of the poultry used meets the requirements of this chapter and the transfer, removal or mutilation of tags in the process of cutting up poultry will not be considered a violation.
