§ 4:53. Preservation of order.(City)

  • The members of the police department shall at all times and in all places and under all circumstances preserve order, peace and quiet in the city, but shall not interfere with or mix among peaceably disposed persons in or around coffee houses, restaurants, bars or other places of public gathering, nor shall they remain in or around such places longer than necessary to quell, disperse or arrest riotous, disorderly or evilly disposed persons, or to protect persons or property when required according to section 4:54. The chief of police may, however, post an officer at any such place of public gathering if in his judgment it be necessary to preserve the peace.
